Smartphones, tablets and other gadgets have quietly become part of daily life for many children today.

From watching videos and playing games to browsing social media, the internet is now one of the spaces where children spend a large portion of their time.

Recent findings suggest that Malaysian children are spending more than eight hours a day online through smartphones and other digital devices.

The figure highlights growing concerns about parental awareness in monitoring how minors use the internet and social media.

“This is why MCMC emphasises the importance of parental control over gadgets. Families can set internet usage limits via smartphones or home WiFi,” she said.

The Safe Internet Campaign also involves parent teacher associations (PIBG) and students as part of efforts to raise awareness about safe internet practices.

Parents are provided with information on age appropriate online content to help them monitor and guide their children’s internet use.

According to Norrazlina, MCMC completed its Safe Internet Campaign across all schools in Perlis last year.
