Teen girls sue Elon Musk’s AI company
It began with a message on social media.
For one teenage girl, it was a warning from an anonymous user. Something was being shared online. Something she had no idea existed.
What she discovered next was deeply disturbing.
According to a lawsuit filed in the United States, three teenage girls are taking legal action against Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI. They allege that its Grok image technology was used to generate and distribute explicit, AI-altered images of them without their knowledge or consent.
Two of the girls are minors.
The case is among the first lawsuits brought by teenagers following growing concerns over the misuse of generative AI tools to create non-consensual sexualised content.
In the complaint, the girls described how altered images and videos, believed to be based on real photos taken when they were younger, were shared across platforms including Discord and Telegram.
Some of the material was allegedly circulated among users as part of exchanges for other harmful content.
For the families involved, the emotional impact has been immediate.
One parent described watching her daughter experience a panic attack after realising the images existed and could not be fully removed from the internet.
Investigators later found related material on a suspect’s phone, leading to an arrest. The lawsuit claims the content was generated using tools linked to Grok through third-party applications.
Lawyers for the plaintiffs argue that even if the images were created via external apps, the technology behind them still relied on xAI’s systems. They also allege that the company failed to put sufficient safeguards in place despite the risks.
xAI has not publicly responded to the claims.
The company’s Grok tool has already faced scrutiny. Earlier this year, researchers estimated that millions of sexualised AI-generated images were created within a short period, including thousands involving minors.
Elon Musk had previously stated that he was not aware of such content being produced and maintained that the system was designed to follow local laws.
