Some opportunities come quietly. Others arrive and change everything.
For British actor Owen Cooper, starring in the Netflix drama Adolescence turned out to be the moment that transformed his life.
As the series marks its first anniversary since debuting on Netflix, the teenage actor reflected on the journey that followed the show’s remarkable success.
In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, Cooper described the day his life took a completely new direction.
“The day my life changed forever,” he wrote. “I shared memories with my family that I’ll remember forever. Accepted awards that I never thought I could possibly achieve. Met people that I’ve watched and adored since I was a little kid.”
The Warrington-born actor became the youngest male performer to win an Emmy Award after his powerful portrayal of a troubled schoolboy accused of murdering a classmate.
For someone appearing in his first-ever on-screen role, the recognition was extraordinary.
The four-part series, created by writer Jack Thorne and actor Stephen Graham, quickly gained international attention for its intense storytelling and its willingness to explore uncomfortable realities faced by many young people today.
Set against the backdrop of school life and online culture, the drama examines issues such as cyberbullying, misogyny and the darker corners of internet communities, including incel culture.
According to Graham, the idea for the series was inspired by two real-life cases that happened within a short period of time, prompting the creators to explore how such tragedies could unfold in modern society.
The show’s impact extended beyond television audiences.
Shortly after its release in March, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer invited the programme’s creators to Downing Street, describing the series as “a torch that shines intensely brightly on a combination of issues that many people don’t know how to respond to”.
For Cooper, however, the journey began long before the awards and international attention.
The teenager was discovered after attending weekly drama classes in Manchester, where teachers reportedly noticed something special about his presence on stage.
From those small beginnings, the role in Adolescence propelled him onto the global stage almost overnight.
Looking back on the Emmy Awards ceremony, where the series collected multiple honours, Cooper admitted the entire experience felt surreal.
“It was crazy and all a bit of a blur,” he recalled. “The amount of people I met there was insane.”
During his acceptance speech, he even paid tribute to his favourite football club Liverpool, ending with a reference to the team’s iconic anthem, You’ll Never Walk Alone.
For a teenager whose acting journey has only just begun, the past year has been nothing short of extraordinary.
“It really was the best day of my life,” he said.
