Naomi Watts shares how her daughter shapes her fashion choices
Naomi Watts has revealed that one of the most honest voices influencing her fashion choices comes from within her own home.
The actress shared that her teenage daughter, Kai Schreiber, often gives direct feedback about her wardrobe, turning everyday style discussions into a regular part of their family dynamic.
“Fashion is a big topic in the household. I take serious notes from her… solicited or unsolicited,” Watts said, explaining how her daughter’s perspective has gradually shaped the way she approaches red-carpet dressing and public appearances.
The Best Actress in Chicago Film Critics Association Awards for movie Mulholland Drive (2001) admitted that while she values her daughter’s opinion, she still trusts her own instincts when making final decisions.
The topic came up when Watts recalled her experience preparing for the Met Gala in 2018. Attending the event as a guest of designer Michael Kors, she was presented with two gown options.
Kai reportedly had a clear favourite and encouraged her mother to choose a specific look for the evening. However, Watts ultimately stepped onto the red carpet in a different dress, a decision that sparked a strong reaction from her daughter at the time.
According to Watts, the moment highlighted how fashion conversations at home often mirror the push and pull between personal expression and outside opinions.
Despite the disagreement, the look her daughter preferred did not stay unworn for long. Months later, Watts chose a custom black ensemble for the Venice Film Festival, giving the previously debated style its moment in the spotlight.
Even then, Kai continued to share her thoughts on the styling, suggesting that removing certain elements added less drama to the overall appearance, while still encouraging a bold fashion statement.
The actress described these exchanges as part of an evolving relationship, where creative discussions feel natural rather than critical.
Beyond red carpets, Watts also opened up about becoming “a bit of a momager” as she supports her daughter’s growing interest in the fashion world.
She shared that allowing Kai to express strong opinions has helped the teenager feel more confident and involved in the creative process.
The actress previously spoke about the experience during an appearance on “Today with Jenna & Friends”, noting that her daughter may be young but shows a clear sense of direction.
