At just 16 years old, Kai Rooney delivered a performance that has football fans talking and drawing inevitable comparisons to his legendary father.

The eldest son of Wayne Rooney lit up the Manchester United youth academy by scoring four goals in a 6‑4 Premier League Cup semi‑final win over Norwich City, a stunning display of finishing and flair that underscores his rising profile in the game.

It wasn’t just the number on the scoresheet that grabbed attention, it was the setting.

Kai’s performance came in one of the biggest youth matches of the season, and he marked it by proudly posting the match ball on Instagram, letting the world know just how special the day was for him.

It is said that the club is pushing to lock down his future with a scholarship deal that could pave the way to a professional contract, potentially worth around £50,000 a year plus bonuses -  a significant step for any young academy star.

Kai has been on United’s books for years, having joined the academy as a child and steadily worked his way up through the age groups.

Earlier this year, he made his Old Trafford debut for the U18s in the FA Youth Cup in front of his parents - Wayne and Coleen - and a roaring crowd chanting “Rooney!” that moment captured both the weight of legacy and his own growing identity as a player.

Despite all the comparisons to his father, Kai has made it clear he wants to forge his own path. “I’m my own person,” he said recently, stressing that he’s focused on his own development and not letting pressure get to him as he chases his dream.
