As global tensions continue to escalate in the Middle East involving Iran, Israel and the United States, many people around the world are closely watching the unfolding developments.

But online attention briefly shifted elsewhere after Kai Trump, the 18-year-old granddaughter of US President Donald Trump, shared a YouTube video showing her shopping trip to what is often described as the world’s most expensive grocery store.

In the 18-minute video titled I Tried the World’s Most Expensive Grocery Store, Kai visits Erewhon in Los Angeles, a high-end supermarket popular among influencers and celebrities.

Accompanied by her Secret Service agent, she strolls through the aisles while casually picking up a variety of wellness products, supplements and ready-to-eat meals.

Erewhon, which was originally founded in Boston in 1966 as a macrobiotic food store, has since evolved into a trendy destination known for its organic products and niche health items. Today, the brand operates several locations across affluent neighbourhoods in California.

During her shopping trip, Kai selects several products including Vital Proteins Collagen Creamer, Perfect Amino tablets and Erewhon’s own vitamin C supplement. She also adds Shilajit Liquid Complex and Ashwagandha tablets to her basket, joking at one point: “Let’s just throw that in there… why not?”

Her purchases continue with a jar of Medjool dates priced at about RM80 (US$17) and a sushi platter costing around RM94 (US$19.99).

From the hot food counter, she picks up Korean BBQ short rib, vegan buffalo cauliflower and brown rice balls before adding more drinks and supplements to her basket.

However, when she spots an Erewhon hoodie priced at about RM780 (US$165), Kai jokes to her Secret Service agent that she might “go bankrupt” if she keeps buying items there.

By the end of the visit, the total bill reaches around RM1,095 (US$233) for just one bag of groceries.

Although the video was shared in a light-hearted tone, many viewers online were less amused.

Several commenters described the content as “tone deaf”, pointing out that many Americans are currently struggling to afford everyday groceries amid rising living costs.

Some even referenced the phrase often associated with Marie Antoinette about starving peasants, joking: “Let them eat cake… or drink Erewhon smoothies.”

Erewhon, meanwhile, describes itself as “more than a grocery store”, positioning the brand as a community centred around healthy and sustainable products.

The upscale supermarket has also become a favourite among Los Angeles celebrities including Kourtney Kardashian, Bella Hadid and Brooklyn Beckham.

However, for many viewers, Kai Trump’s video has sparked debate about tone and timing, particularly at a moment when global tensions and economic pressures remain a concern for many.
