For many people, Christian Bale will always be remembered as Batman. But away from the cameras, the actor is quietly working on something just as meaningful.
Bale is helping bring a $30 million foster care community to life in California, with one simple but powerful goal — keeping siblings together.
The project, called Together California, aims to create a neighbourhood-style environment where foster families can care for children while allowing brothers and sisters to stay close to one another.
The idea was inspired by similar communities already operating in Illinois, where experienced foster parents help guide and support new ones.
Foster care can be demanding, and nearly half of foster parents leave within their first year.
One reason Bale’s project matters so much is the impact of sibling separation in the foster care system.
Many children placed into care are separated from their brothers or sisters due to limited placements. Yet those sibling bonds can provide stability during a difficult and uncertain time.
Caregivers who have worked closely with foster children say the effects can be profound. Younger children often rely on older siblings for comfort and reassurance, while older siblings may feel a deep sense of responsibility for those younger than them.
When they are separated, both can struggle with the sudden loss of that connection.
The project has set a fundraising goal of $30 million, with more than $25 million already committed. The funding will support everything from construction to furniture for the families who will eventually live there. Through Bale’s efforts, Together California has also attracted support from individual and organisational donors, including contributions reportedly tied to supporters such as Leonardo DiCaprio, as well as Bale’s own pocket.
For Bale, the initiative reflects a belief that support systems matter — not just for children, but for the families who step forward to care for them.
