Rebecca Gayheart celebrates daughter’s 16th birthday days after Eric Dane’s passing
Some family moments arrive wrapped in mixed emotions.
Just days after the passing of actor Eric Dane, Rebecca Gayheart marked an important milestone for their eldest daughter, Billie, who recently turned 16.
Instead of letting grief overshadow the moment entirely, Gayheart chose to celebrate her daughter’s birthday with a heartfelt tribute on Instagram.
Alongside a throwback photo of Billie as a toddler, the actress shared a simple but emotional message.
“Happy Sweet 16 to the sweetest girl — mommy loves you to the moon and back unconditionally forever and ever,” she wrote.
The childhood photo showed Billie smiling brightly, wearing a denim jumper dress with a pink flower tucked into her hair while holding a pink ice cream cone.
Gayheart also shared a small collection of family photos, capturing memories of Billie growing up surrounded by loved ones, including her father and younger sister, Georgia.
The montage was accompanied by Fleetwood Mac’s Landslide, a song often associated with reflection and the passing of time.
Another moment shared on Instagram Stories showed Billie and Georgia smiling while riding a pink and purple child-sized Jeep together, with a simple caption wishing Billie a happy birthday.
The celebration came during an incredibly difficult period for the family.
Eric Dane, widely known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, passed away on Feb 19 at the age of 53 after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
According to the family, he spent much of his illness advocating for greater awareness and research surrounding the condition.
Despite their complicated relationship history, Gayheart and Dane remained closely connected as a family, especially after his diagnosis.
The couple married in 2004 and share two daughters together, Billie and Georgia.
Although Gayheart initially filed for divorce in 2018, she later withdrew the filing during Dane’s illness.
In a previous podcast interview, she explained that the decision was rooted in the values she wanted to show their daughters.
She believed it was important for them to understand the meaning of showing up for family during life’s most difficult moments.
“We show up for people no matter what,” she shared at the time.
As the family continues to navigate loss, Billie’s birthday became a reminder that life’s milestones do not pause, even in the middle of grief.
