Today’s teenagers have adapted to a lifestyle defined by convenience and constant connectivity.
From dinners spent in front of iPads and phones, to long hours of online gaming and scrolling through social media, this has become the defining rhythm of modern teenage life.
Admittedly, many teenagers today lead increasingly sedentary lifestyles, where movement is limited and daily routines are largely anchored around screens.
While this pattern has become the norm, it is important for teens to recognise that their lifestyle during these formative years can quietly shape long-term health patterns well into adulthood.
Doctors are warning that this modern routine may be quietly disrupting something far more fundamental: hormonal and reproductive health.
Doctors are observing a shift in how hormonal and reproductive issues present in teenagers.
What was once considered an adult concern is now taking root during adolescence, often masked as routine growing pains.
“We are seeing a noticeable rise. Teenagers are presenting earlier with irregular periods, acne, weight related hormonal imbalance, and even early features suggestive of conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). This reflects a shift in lifestyle and environmental factors,” says GenPrime Everlink medical director Dr Mathi Arasu.
The symptoms are often subtle and easily dismissed.
“Irregular menstrual cycles, severe acne, excessive facial hair, rapid weight gain, or difficulty maintaining weight are early signs for girls. In boys, delayed puberty or significant weight issues can also signal hormonal imbalance,” he said.
More concerning is how early certain conditions are now being diagnosed.
“Yes, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is being diagnosed at a younger age now. This is largely due to better access to healthcare and increased awareness among parents.
“While genetics still plays a role, lifestyle factors are increasingly accelerating its expression,” said Dr Mathi.
At the centre of this shift is a pattern of behaviour that has become increasingly normalised which are prolonged sitting, minimal physical activity, irregular sleep, and high sugar consumption.
“A sedentary lifestyle reduces insulin sensitivity and contributes to weight gain, both of which disrupt hormonal balance.
“Over time, this can affect ovulation and menstrual regularity in females, as well as testosterone balance in males,” he added.
Sleep, often compromised by screen use, plays a critical role.
“Sleep plays a key role in regulating hormones such as melatonin and cortisol, which indirectly affect reproductive hormones.
“Chronic sleep deprivation can disrupt ovulation cycles, delay puberty progression, and worsen conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS),” said Dr Mathi.
Diet further compounds the issue, particularly with the increased intake of sugary drinks and processed foods.
“High sugar intake contributes to insulin resistance, which is a major driver of hormonal imbalance and PCOS. Over time, this increases the risk of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and reduced fertility potential later in life,” he said.
Despite growing awareness of reproductive health, there remains a critical gap in how it is understood by teenagers. Fertility still seen as an adult problem even when the risk factors start much earlier.
“Hormonal health starts developing during adolescence, but awareness has not fully caught up with this reality,” he said.
Intervention, experts say, does not require drastic measures, but it does require consistency.
“Simple changes such as 45 minutes of daily walking, maintaining consistent sleep patterns, reducing sugar and processed food intake, and limiting screen time while spending more time outdoors can make a meaningful difference.”
“Without early intervention, we may see higher rates of infertility, metabolic diseases, and pregnancy-related complications in the future,” he said.
